As a musical term, the concerto grosso (Italian for “big concert”) is a piece in which a group of solo instruments take centre stage in a prominent and virtuoso manner. With their production Concerto Grosso, the Ataneres string ensemble once again present an accessible and anything but mainstream concert. For the soloist roles, they rely on the Kugoni Trio, which has been an established name in the Flemish concert world since 2010.
The connecting thread in this concert is the vibrant Concierto del Angel by Astor Piazzolla, the Argentine composer who was born exactly 100 years ago. In addition, Kugoni and Ataneres present several Flemish compositions of the highest quality, classics from the trio’s repertoire. The Flemish pieces have been transcribed specially for this production for the concerto grosso’s extraordinary orchestration. Directed by Pieter Schuermans, the ensembles surprise with a contemporary programme and demonstrate they are perfect musical partners.
