Romances and opera arias
It is said that Empress Joséphine gave concerts once a week at the Château de Malmaison. The artists settled in the music salon as the audience took place among the paintings and the antiques of the large adjoining hall. The harp and the pianoforte resonated in romances, favourite airs and sonatas filled with the spirit of the opera. Joséphine supported French composers but also Italians such as Paisiello, Paër or Spontini.
This concert recreates a musical moment at Malmaison: airs from French and Italian operas, transcribed for the piano and the harp, mingle with tender melodies, so popular with music lovers at the start of the 19th century.
