Schubert's Sonate D.821 is a wonderful display of balance and inspiration. It is one of the most often played pieces of the composer. Its name Arpeggione stems from the instrument for which Schubert destined the piece in 1824. It’s a hybrid instrument, somewhere between a viola da gamba and a bow-played guitar. Its success was limited to this composition, which was published only in 1871 in arrangements for violin or cello, and later viola.
