The Amsterdam-based music platform Space is the Place visits Leuven with a double bill…
In the quartet Ruidoscuro, Frank Rosaly merges his Puerto Rican roots with his background as an improviser, composer and jazz musician. He plays acoustic instruments and uses electronics to create extraterrestrial reflections of indigenous instruments. Their music tells a dark and haunting story in a layered context of twisting polyrhythms, bitonal melodic material and twisting harmonic structures. Strictly sequential patterns against improvisation embody ritualistic musical movements. The quartet tells a gloomy tale, music to get lost in.
Farida Amadou plays the bass guitar like no other: unpolished and quasi-rumbly, with a metallic timbre and emphasis on rhythm. Being self-taught, she produces the most exciting notes out of her Fender bass. Even though she is a relatively new face in the improvisation scene, she already collaborated with Thurston Moore (Sonic Youth), Hanne De Backer, Colin Stetson and Audrey Lauro.
