A concert in which Johann Sebastian Bach’s contrapuntal mastery takes centre stage: with music composed by Bach or inspired by Bach’s oeuvre.

The scintillating simplicity of the piano in the capable hands of Julien Libeer contrasts with the rich sound texture of the vocal pieces performed by the Flemish Radio Choir. Or how a rational technique can move people so deeply.

The age-old technique of counterpoint has had a huge impact on the identity, personality and expression of Western music. It has made classical music richer and more layered, and blossomed forth thanks to Johann Sebastian Bach’s virtuoso skill.

This is a tribute to counterpoint: the art of using transient sounds to create a tight fabric in which melody and harmony condense to something almost tangible is still alive and kicking today, courtesy of grandmaster Johann Sebastian Bach.

Fugue, canon, imitation: he mastered all the counterpoint techniques. The ripple effect of his oeuvre on Western music has continued through the centuries and has impacted nearly all genres of music written since then, even jazz.
