Johannes Brahms (1833-1897)
String Sextet No. 1, op. 18

String Sextet No. 1, composed between 1859 and 1860, was one of Johannes Brahms’s first major successes. Written for two violins, two violas and two cellos, the work showcases the breadth and depth of Brahms’s compositional thinking from an early age. Combining warm melodic lines, classical elegance and Romantic intensity, the sextet unfolds a broad, clear sound world that is characteristic of the young Brahms.
