In this concert, Leuven-born pianist Brecht Valckenaers explores two visionary worlds of piano music. In Messiaen’s works, rhythm, colour and resonance form the foundations of a highly personal musical language, in which the piano becomes an instrument of meditation and ecstasy. In Scriabin’s Fifth Sonata, the tension builds note by note, culminating in an all-consuming sonic blaze. In the concise Vers la Flamme, a late work from 1914, the composer pushes this procedure to a breaking-ground climax.
