For centuries, the carillon has sounded high above our heads, in towers overlooking the city. But what if it leaves its familiar surroundings and is positioned among other instruments? In carillonneur Jasper Depraetere’s innovative chamber music project Beyond the Bells, the carillon steps out of its tower and seeks a new balance in chamber music.
Carillonneur Jasper Depraetere invites percussionist Jasmijn Vandecaetsbeek and pianist Lenny Bui-Vandeput to test the boundaries of sound, rhythm and interplay together. The carillon, often regarded as a soloistic and monumental instrument, becomes in this programme a subtle, rhythmic and harmonious player within an ensemble.
The common thread in this concert? Movement. Literally, because the mobile carillon moves from tower to stage, but also musically - in the undulating patterns of Catching Shadows (Ivan Trevino), the drama and quiet of Nocturne (Jeroen Malaise), and the pulsating power of Atalanta (John Psathas) using electronics.
The two promising Belgian composers Pieter Opsteyn and Jonas Gedeshi have specially written brand new works for this project in which the carillon is assigned an unexpected role, to be heard in 30CC in this world premiere. Here, we do not look at what a carillon should be, but what it can be.
Beyond the Bells is a musical adventure in which tradition and innovation enter into dialogue. A rare opportunity to hear the carillon in a completely new light.
