The Herman Servotte Lecture puts contemporary English authors in the spotlight.
Previously, we welcomed Nadine Gordimer, Derek Walcott, David Mitchell, Jon McGregor and Jennifer Egan, among others. Sarah Moss will definitely add a memorable new edition to this strong series.
She broke through to the general public with three short bestsellers that make reading something reality shows can only dream of:
- Ghost Wall (2018) is a dark and haunting tale of an archaeological experiment that ends disastrously.
- Summerwater (2020) observes the looming discontent with the hell that is always others at a rained-out holiday camp in Scotland.
- The Fell (2021) follows the search for a woman fleeing COVID quarantine on a dangerous night walk, while her son and neighbour worry.
Each of the three books could be the script for a thrilling reality show: a small group of people in a limited environment facing a potentially dramatic challenge, preferably one that also stimulates discussion about what can, should and does happen in real life today. Big Brother is lurking around the corner.
